DXN Ultrasonic Flow Meter goes wireless!
Bell Flow Systems were recently pleased to support a new client on the delivery of an advanced wireless flow and energy measurement project.
The application criteria was clear, the client wanted to be able to use an ultrasonic flow meter as a portable stand-alone unit, but occasionally for remote applications they needed to be able to leave the flow meter installed on site, with access to the systems data maintained remotely. The application involved energy audit tasks, so a model with thermal energy integration was specified.
For the flow meter, Bell Flow Systems selected the Badger Meter- DXN ultrasonic flow meter. This meter is a hybrid device capable of both transit time and Doppler flow measurement. On this occasion the heat meter option was provided which facilitates thermal heat energy measurement.
To ensure that the equipment supplied could be used as a hand-held unit, connection to the DXN meter had to be simple and lightweight. For this reason, single cable Ethernet over I/P connectivity was chosen for the DXN and to this our UG1005 logging telemetry system was connected. Via this communication protocol, information including: Flow rate, Supply and Return Temperatures and signal strength could be collected from the DXN to provide all of the results and diagnostic information in real time, with data recorded every minute.
Advantages of Dynasonics® Easy Rails
The new EasyRail system for the ultrasonic TFX-Ultra® flow meter range allows versatile mounting of the flow meters clamp-on sensors. It is available in different sizes and is very easy to use. You can watch an installation example in the video below.
Bell Flow Systems were recently approach by a customer who was having a problem with their existing meter installation. The customer had previously installed a geared flow meter for their application, but suspended particles in the water were causing the meter to jam, and ultimately seize. In turn, this created further problems down the production line as a knock on effect.
The customer’s application was for silty and sandy water as a result of borehole testing. For the majority of the time the water was clean, but occasionally there would be silt and sand suspended in the water. This was where the issue arose with the existing meter jamming.
For this reason, Bell Flow Systems thought the best option was to quote an accurate meter with no moving parts. A Badger Meter M1000 Mag Flow Meter was chosen, as it featured no moving parts. The meter would measure the clean water, and no damage would be caused to the meter by occasional sand or silt in the water.
The M1000 has an accuracy of ±0.5%, is available with hard rubber or PTFE liner, wafer, DIN or ANSI flanged connections. Hastelloy C measuring & empty pipe electrodes as standard, as well as pulse and 4-20mA outputs.
After fitting the M1000 mag meter, the customer reported having no more issues with this application!
Introducing the new iSonic 4000, a versatile ultrasonic flow meter for open channels and partially filled pipes. The iSonic 4000 can also be used for measuring volumetric contents of liquids in tanks.
Suitable for clean water and waste water applications. The iSonic 4000 can be used in combination with weirs or flumes using one of the pre-programmed tables, or a 35 point calibration table may be used instead.
This model can display values and control applications with a selection of outputs and data-communication options. It can also be used for sending readings to the internal data logger with a capacity for approximately 130,000 readings. Data can be downloaded using the ‘Flow Meter Tool’ PC software which also allows the user to programme all parameters. The user PC can be connected via USB interface or Ethernet interface.
The programming menu is integrated within the large graphic LCD display, offering a wide variety of primary flow element options, such as flumes and weirs. It also displays the flow rate of partially filled pipes, open channels, as well as linearized tank contents measurement options.
Models include 4-20mA output and ModBus RTU, RS422, RS485 and Ethernet interfaces as standard. Due to the unique features and IP67 protection rated aluminium housing, the iSonic 4000 is suitable for applications in harsh environments.

The M5000 IP68plus is a battery operated electromagnetic flow meter designed for water metering and management. It is designed to meet the highest demands of water metering applications assuring the user of reliable and accurate measurements with low maintenance. The meter comes certified to OIML R49 and MID MI-001 providing a meter that conforms to the requirements throughout Europe and the world.
With many water metering applications it is often found that the meter will be submersed and it is essential that the meter will still work in these situations. The M5000 IP68plus as its name suggests is IP68 rated suitable for continuous immersion and the integral model can still be operated whilst immersed.
Another constraint can be the lack of power supply in remote areas, but the M5000 is battery powered and offers up to 20 years life allowing the meter to work without the worry of regular maintenance. With many meter technologies there is a requirement for straight sections of pipe before and after the meter, which limits the installation position and often requires pipe modifications, however the M5000 IP68plus requires no straight pipe sections making it a great option where installation points are limited.
The M5000 also boats and internal data logger function to monitor water usage that can be accessed by the IrDA interface avoiding opening the front panel of the device. There is also the added option of a GSM/GPRS modem to transmit the logged data.
Bell Flow Systems have recently been approached for a grain driers application in Saudi Arabia. The customer needed a robust meter, with a local display to show total usage only, which would withstand the ambient temperature and require minimal maintenance. The meters were required to measure the diesel used to fuel the grain driers.
The Badger Meter RCDL Recordall flow meter was selected, in bronze with a mechanical accumulating totaliser. The positive displacement meter was ideal as it has very low pressure loss and a wide flow range, meaning there was no risk of the meter starving the drier, and the wide flow range meant that if the drier was only on at half power, the meter would still measure the flow accurately.
Introducing the RCT1000 Coriolis mass flow meter, the latest addition to Badger Meter USA’s growing product portfolio.
RCT1000 meters are especially suited to the precise measurement of high viscosity fluids, aggressive media and contaminated fluids as well as high density gases, whilst maintaining a wide turndown ratio. Typical applications for these mass flow meters will include filling or dosing oils, solvents and chemicals and measuring adhesives or binding materials, coatings and hardeners, dyes, vitamins and other additives.
Renowned for their outstanding accuracy and versatility in measuring challenging flow applications, Coriolis principle flow meters have been employed in a wide variety of industries and applications. Coriolis flow meters are true multi-variable instruments, which means that they provide simultaneous measurement of mass flow, density, temperature and volume flow.
A valuable feature of this design is the lack of internal moving parts, enabling the flow meter to experience little or no mechanical wear, resulting in a long operational life expectancy. These meters offer low cost maintenance operation and flexible integration options.
The RCT1000 is capable of controlling equipment, such as valves and pumps with PID and batch control signals. The transmitter features a user-lock feature to prevent accidental activation as well as a local LCD display with optical buttons which allow the operator to navigate the display through the glass without opening the enclosure.
Network communications options for this model include; EtherNet/IP, 4-20mA HART, Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU. The RCT1000 meters feature mass flow accuracy of -/+ 0.1% with a pressure range up to 2150 PSI (148 bar) and options for use in hazardous areas. For more information on this Coriolis meter range, contact Bell Flow Systems on sales@bellflowsystems.co.uk or 0800 027 7786.
Weird Beard Brew Company, a London based brewery who specialise in hand-crafted beers came to Bell Flow looking for a flow meter to use in their brewery. The requirement was for a high accuracy meter, with minimal wear and tear to ensure longevity and minimal maintenance, allowing more time to make delicious beer!
The Badger Meter MIDF Hygienic electromagnetic flow meter was chosen and was to be used with both beer and water in the process, so it needed to be hygienic and have sanitary fittings. In this case, tri-clamp connections as these were already in place throughout the brewery, so this would allow easy installation with minimal interference and would allow the meter to be easily removed and put into a different line if needed.
The hygienic mag meter features a food safe PTFE liner, 304 stainless steel body, and tri-clamp connections. The tri-clamp connections enables the meter to be easily removed from one line and put into various points within the process to measure water going into a vessel and beer out of another.
In addition, this meter has an accuracy of ±0.25% and no moving parts, allowing it to prevent wear and tear that traditional styles of meters often have.
Coupled with the M2000 LCD amplifier, this also gives pulse and 4-20mA outputs which can be used for monitoring and batch control and provides a high performance for all conductive fluid applications. The backlit LCD screen shows actual flow rate with 2 totalisers and status. For more information on the MIDF mag meter, please contact us at sales@bellflowsystems.co.uk or 0800 027 7786.
Bell Flow Systems were recently asked to provide a meter suitable for accurately measuring and recording the flow of sea water being pumped across a beach at Hinkley point.
Hinkley point in Somerset is the site for a new nuclear power station, the first in the UK for a generation. As the 10 year construction scheme begins there are many environmental factors to be considered at each phase. One of these is to ensure that enough water is pumped from the sea to areas where it is required to help preserve marine life following the temporary construction of a new jetty and sea wall, built to allow materials for the construction of the power station to be delivered by sea.
To provide evidence of sufficient pumped water supply, Bell Flow Systems were required to provide a suitable flow sensor to meet the demands of the application. The flow meter must be compatible with sea water and designed to cope with the challenging weather conditions found on this beach side installation location. It must also be internally powered and capable of accurately logging the volume of water pumped. The ModMag M5000 from Badger Meter was the ideal solution.
The M5000 electromagnetic flow meter is battery powered giving up to 20 years battery life, making it suitable for applications where power is not available. The robust amplifier has IP67 or optional IP68 ingress protection, making it suitable for harsh operating environments and the meter its’s self measures with an accuracy better than ±0.4% of reading. The M5000 also benefits from an integral data logger, able to record and store the volume measured at programmable time intervals which can be downloaded to PC software via the IrDA or RS232 ModBus communication ports.
Electromagnetic measuring technology is maintenance- free and operates without mechanical moving parts, prolonging the life of the meter and allowing it to be used with fluids that may contain solids including sand and organic solids. The available choices of meter liner and electrode materials, makes it an ideal choice for various corrosive and aggressive fluids including sea water.

Bell Flow Systems were recently asked by a well regarded UK train operating company to supply non-invasive flow meter equipment that could easily be installed to carry out short term tests of oil flows on a number of trains in their fleet.
The client selected our DXN flow meter as it is easily clamped onto the outside of the pipe therefore avoiding the task of breaking the pipework to install a traditional in-line solution. DXN uses ultrasonic technology to gather accurate results 'non-intrusively', which does not require the trains systems to be turned off, which ensures rolling stock down-time is cut to a minimum. Measurement of flow is taken using a pair of clamp-on non-invasive ultrasonic sensors which take over 100 readings per second. The DXN meter benefits from a number of advanced features including a touchscreen interface, wizard-based start-up configuration, USB connectivity and Modbus TCP/IP connectivity.
The DXN portable ultrasonic flow meter from Dynasonics is capable of measuring a variety of liquid flows by employing multiple technologies, including both Doppler and transit time as well as having the capability to measure thermal heat energy using the Heat Meter accessory kit. The advantages of this hybrid technology are that it is able to instantaneously switch between Transit time and Doppler measurement depending on the current fluid properties.
Badger Meter’s ModMag M5000 water meter has been given OIML and MID approval according to OIML R49-1 and MID M-001. OIML is the International Organisation of Legal Metrology established to promote global harmonisation of legal metrology procedure. The Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) is a European directive that matches the requirements of 10 different measuring instrument types, including gas and active electrical energy meters. The M5000 meter was found to meet the requirements required both within the OIML and MID test.
