Bell Flow Systems have recently been approached for a grain driers application in Saudi Arabia. The customer needed a robust meter, with a local display to show total usage only, which would withstand the ambient temperature and require minimal maintenance. The meters were required to measure the diesel used to fuel the grain driers.
The Badger Meter RCDL Recordall flow meter was selected, in bronze with a mechanical accumulating totaliser. The positive displacement meter was ideal as it has very low pressure loss and a wide flow range, meaning there was no risk of the meter starving the drier, and the wide flow range meant that if the drier was only on at half power, the meter would still measure the flow accurately.

Weird Beard Brew Company, a London based brewery who specialise in hand-crafted beers came to Bell Flow looking for a flow meter to use in their brewery. The requirement was for a high accuracy meter, with minimal wear and tear to ensure longevity and minimal maintenance, allowing more time to make delicious beer!
The Badger Meter MIDF Hygienic electromagnetic flow meter was chosen and was to be used with both beer and water in the process, so it needed to be hygienic and have sanitary fittings. In this case, tri-clamp connections as these were already in place throughout the brewery, so this would allow easy installation with minimal interference and would allow the meter to be easily removed and put into a different line if needed.
The hygienic mag meter features a food safe PTFE liner, 304 stainless steel body, and tri-clamp connections. The tri-clamp connections enables the meter to be easily removed from one line and put into various points within the process to measure water going into a vessel and beer out of another.
In addition, this meter has an accuracy of ±0.25% and no moving parts, allowing it to prevent wear and tear that traditional styles of meters often have.
Coupled with the M2000 LCD amplifier, this also gives pulse and 4-20mA outputs which can be used for monitoring and batch control and provides a high performance for all conductive fluid applications. Bell Flow Systems were recently asked to provide a meter suitable for accurately measuring and recording the flow of sea water being pumped across a beach at Hinkley point.
Hinkley point in Somerset is the site for a new nuclear power station, the first in the UK for a generation. As the 10 year construction scheme begins there are many environmental factors to be considered at each phase. One of these is to ensure that enough water is pumped from the sea to areas where it is required to help preserve marine life following the temporary construction of a new jetty and sea wall, built to allow materials for the construction of the power station to be delivered by sea.
To provide evidence of sufficient pumped water supply, Bell Flow Systems were required to provide a suitable flow sensor to meet the demands of the application. The flow meter must be compatible with sea water and designed to cope with the challenging weather conditions found on this beach side installation location. It must also be internally powered and capable of accurately logging the volume of water pumped. The ModMag M5000 from Badger Meter was the ideal solution.
The M5000 electromagnetic flow meter is battery powered giving up to 20 years battery life, making it suitable for applications where power is not available. The robust amplifier has IP67 or optional IP68 ingress protection, making it suitable for harsh operating environments and the meter its’s self measures with an accuracy better than ±0.4% of reading. Vision models are entirely constructed from Trogamid which is low-priced, transparent and ultra-light. All materials used are compliant with the requirements of the drinking water approval. The QuikSert turbine flow meter range from Blancett are designed for accurate measurement of various liquids such as water, chemicals and light oils. This wafer style meter is quickly inserted between pipeline flanges and performs well in harsh environments due to it's rugged stainless steel construction and selection of safe and hazardous area displays. Incorporated inside the turbine meter is a helical rotor with long-life tungsten carbide shaft and bearings.

Bell Flow Systems were recently asked by a well regarded UK train operating company to supply non-invasive flow meter equipment that could easily be installed to carry out short term tests of oil flows on a number of trains in their fleet.
The client selected our DXN flow meter as it is easily clamped onto the outside of the pipe therefore avoiding the task of breaking the pipework to install a traditional in-line solution. DXN uses ultrasonic technology to gather accurate results 'non-intrusively', which does not require the trains systems to be turned off, which ensures rolling stock down-time is cut to a minimum. Measurement of flow is taken using a pair of clamp-on non-invasive ultrasonic sensors which take over 100 readings per second. The DXN meter benefits from a number of advanced features including a touchscreen interface, wizard-based start-up configuration, USB connectivity and Modbus TCP/IP connectivity.
The DXN portable ultrasonic flow meter from Dynasonics is capable of measuring a variety of liquid flows by employing multiple technologies, including both Doppler and transit time as well as having the capability to measure thermal heat energy using the Heat Meter accessory kit. The advantages of this hybrid technology are that it is able to instantaneously switch between Transit time and Doppler measurement depending on the current fluid properties.

OIML is the International Organisation of Legal Metrology established to promote global harmonisation of legal metrology procedure. Kuwait is one of the most water-scarce regions in the world but at the same time has one of the highest per capita water consumption rates at 500 litres per day. In order to monitor this consumption and develop water management strategies, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water have begun deploying innovative water meters.

Over the last 25 years Blancett have built up a reputation for producing rugged and accurate stainless steel turbines which remain popular within the oil and gas industry today. The QuikSert is one of Blancett’s innovative turbines which has been designed for quick installation.
The QuikSert is an in-line turbine flow meter that provides the same high accuracy and rigorous design of the standard Blancett turbine, but in a wafer-style mounting configuration. It’s unique between flanges design eliminates the need for mating flanges, requires less space in the flow line, lowers costs and provides easy, one-man installation.
Turbine flow meters operate by the fluid or gas passing through a turbine, causing the turbine to rotate at a speed proportional to velocity. As each turbine blade passes through the magnetic field generated by the meter's magnetic pick-up, an AC voltage pulse is generated. These pulses provide an output frequency that is proportional to volumetric flow.
The QuikSert in-line turbine flow meter was developed for liquid and gas applications where accuracy and dependability are of concern to the operator. For fluids the meter achieves an accuracy of ±1%, repeatability of ±0.1% and can handle temperatures up to +232°C with high temp pick up and for gas the meter achieves an accuracy of ±2%, repeatability of ±0.5% and can handle temperatures up to +330°C.
The meter features a 316 stainless steel housing and rotor support, CD4MCU stainless steel rotor, and abrasion-resistant tungsten carbide rotor shaft and bearings. which were designed for a project in which the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) would increase their water distribution capacity and reliability, allowing them to meet expanding fresh water demands in several southern California counties.
This picture was taken at a test facility where the meters met accuracy standards set by the California DWR at flow ranges ranging from 4500 to 80,000 gallons per minute.
Hydraulic Fluid Leak Detection Made Safer with Hedland Flow Meters (First published on Badgermeter.com)
Hydraulic fluid power is often used to perform operational movement of heavy equipment. Small leaks in most hydraulic equipment are difficult to avoid, and in some cases small leaks are acceptable if they can be controlled. However, if left undetected, these smaller leaks can become larger, which can cause outright machinery failure. Failure of hydraulic machinery can cause costly downtime and put machine operators' safety at risk.
Because hydraulic fluid operates under high pressure, it is difficult to diagnose hydraulic circuit issues when the machinery is powered off. A common cause of operator injuries in hydraulic systems is operators physically investigating leaks while the system is operational because the fluid can be very hot and the lines are under pressure.
By installing Hedland flow meters to their equipment, operators get a clear, visible indication of hydraulic line health during operation, without the dangers of a person coming in close contact with operating machinery. A higher-than-usual flow reading may indicate a significant leak while a lower-than-usual flow reading may indicate a possible line blockage.
Where accurate flow measurements are required or even critical, it is imperative that the flow meter being used is producing correct and consistent results. Only by calibrating a flow meter can you provide assurance that it is performing accurately and within it’s stated specifications.
We recently commissioned an in-house flow meter calibration facility to offer low cost, flexible calibration services for flow meters of many measuring principles and sizes.
The facility sited in Buckinghamshire consists of three calibration rigs for water, oil and micro flow. The test rigs are UKAS traceable and are currently undergoing the development of quality, admin and technical operations to ISO 17025 with a vision to be certified early next year.
Our calibration facility can test flow meters between ¼” and 4” in size and can handle flow rates from 0.001 litres up to 1000 litres per minute. The rigs incorporate highly accurate master meters as reference devices, the water calibration rig for example uses the latest electromagnetic flow meters from Badger Meter that perform to an accuracy of better than ±0.25%.
This new service allows us to offer re-calibrations of existing flow meters that are no longer performing correctly and also provide new flow meters pre-prepared for their application to reduce any inaccurate calibrations being made onsite by customers. The calibration facility will also be used for confirming the accuracy of flow meters, technology demonstrations and staff training.
In addition to the option of in-house calibration, a technician from Bell Flow Systems can also carry out an on-site calibration using proven re-calibration techniques if required. All calibrations are issued with a calibration certificate to ensure that all flow meters calibrated by us offer repeatable, accurate measurement, guaranteed.
