June 2017 ... Positive Displacement Meter for Grain Driers

Bell Flow Systems have recently been approached for a grain driers application in Saudi Arabia. The customer needed a robust meter, with a local display to show total usage only, which would withstand the ambient temperature and require minimal maintenance. The meters were required to measure the diesel used to fuel the grain driers.

The Badger Meter RCDL Recordall flow meter was selected, in bronze with a mechanical accumulating totaliser. The positive displacement meter was ideal as it has very low pressure loss and a wide flow range, meaning there was no risk of the meter starving the drier, and the wide flow range meant that if the drier was only on at half power, the meter would still measure the flow accurately.

 

The mechanical display has an accumulated non-resettable total, and can handle the ambient temperature. In a location where the weather can hit an average temperature of 43⁰C in the summer months, this was an important factor to consider.

The series is best suited for metering fluids up to a viscosity of 700 mPas and at an operating temperature up to 50°C or up to 120°C, material & display dependant. The meter offers an accuracy of ±0.5%, and is available in sizes from ¾” to 2”, in plastic, Bronze, stainless steel and PVDF, and is available with digital or mechanical displays, with or without pulse output, or blind outputs only.

April 2017 ... Hygienic Mag Meter Installation in London Brewery

Weird Beard Brew Company, a London based brewery who specialise in hand-crafted beers came to Bell Flow looking for a flow meter to use in their brewery. The requirement was for a high accuracy meter, with minimal wear and tear to ensure longevity and minimal maintenance, allowing more time to make delicious beer!

The Badger Meter MIDF Hygienic electromagnetic flow meter was chosen and was to be used with both beer and water in the process, so it needed to be hygienic and have sanitary fittings. In this case, tri-clamp connections as these were already in place throughout the brewery, so this would allow easy installation with minimal interference and would allow the meter to be easily removed and put into a different line if needed.
 


The hygienic mag meter features a food safe PTFE liner, 304 stainless steel body, and tri-clamp connections. The tri-clamp connections enables the meter to be easily removed from one line and put into various points within the process to measure water going into a vessel and beer out of another.

In addition, this meter has an accuracy of ±0.25% and no moving parts, allowing it to prevent wear and tear that traditional styles of meters often have.

Coupled with the M2000 LCD amplifier, this also gives pulse and 4-20mA outputs which can be used for monitoring and batch control and provides a high performance for all conductive fluid applications. March 2017 ... Hinkley Point Power Station Application

Bell Flow Systems were recently asked to provide a meter suitable for accurately measuring and recording the flow of sea water being pumped across a beach at Hinkley point.

Hinkley point in Somerset is the site for a new nuclear power station, the first in the UK for a generation. As the 10 year construction scheme begins there are many environmental factors to be considered at each phase. One of these is to ensure that enough water is pumped from the sea to areas where it is required to help preserve marine life following the temporary construction of a new jetty and sea wall, built to allow materials for the construction of the power station to be delivered by sea.

To provide evidence of sufficient pumped water supply, Bell Flow Systems were required to provide a suitable flow sensor to meet the demands of the application. The flow meter must be compatible with sea water and designed to cope with the challenging weather conditions found on this beach side installation location. It must also be internally powered and capable of accurately logging the volume of water pumped. The ModMag M5000 from Badger Meter was the ideal solution.

The M5000 electromagnetic flow meter is battery powered giving up to 20 years battery life, making it suitable for applications where power is not available. The robust amplifier has IP67 or optional IP68 ingress protection, making it suitable for harsh operating environments and the meter its’s self measures with an accuracy better than ±0.4% of reading. The M5000 also benefits from an integral data logger, able to record and store the volume measured at programmable time intervals which can be downloaded to PC software via the IrDA or RS232 ModBus communication ports.

Electromagnetic measuring technology is maintenance- free and operates without mechanical moving parts, prolonging the life of the meter and allowing it to be used with fluids that may contain solids including sand and organic solids. The available choices of meter liner and electrode materials, makes it an ideal choice for various corrosive and aggressive fluids including sea water.

The Impeller series from Badger Meter - USA is a range of insertion style flow sensors designed to measure water and chemicals via insertion through the pipe wall.

Fitting an insertion meter is simpler, faster and cheaper than cutting a section from the pipework to install a full-bore flow meter.

Featuring a closed, six-bladed impeller design, using a proprietary, non-magnetic sensing technology, these meters offer high repeatability at lower flow rates. Sensors can be interchangeable, eliminating the need for recalibration after service or replacement.

Impeller flow meters are available in a choice of construction materials and a variety of sizes and outputs or LCD displays. With an accuracy of +/-1% and flow rates up to 9 m/s and up to 69 bar, depending on model, the Impeller series makes an ideal choice for use with corrosive and non-corrosive fluids even at higher system pressure.

Badger Meter Vision series of turbine flow meters have been examined, tested and found to comply with the requirements of The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme, also known as WRAS.

Vision models are entirely constructed from Trogamid which is low-priced, transparent and ultra-light. All materials used are compliant with the requirements of the drinking water approval. The turbines can also be used with a variety of liquids such as water, fuels, ink and weak acids and is resistant to ethanol and methanol.

With simple installation and no maintenance, the Vision turbines are a highly reliable choice for low flow applications. Instant and total flow can be displayed when combined with a digital display such as the ILR 700 series electronic register.

 

 

Thanks to best technical properties, there are various applications that the Vision turbine flow meters can be used for. Typical applications include industrial applications like in cooling plants, dosing, irrigation and dispensing systems, or in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

Hedland variable area flow meters give a clearly visible indication of system flow with a choice of optional electronic outputs. The traditional variable area design has been brought up-to-date by utilising a sharp edged orifice and spring loaded float to ensure operation in any orientation.

Constructed from a choice of aluminium, brass or stainless steel and with an accuracy of ±2%, the rugged construction of Hedland meters enables them to work under a wide range of harsh conditions encountered in modern industrial applications. Operational pressures are up to 6000 psi/414 bar and temperatures up to 260°C/500°F. Suitable for Water, Oil, Chemicals and Gas.

November 2016 ... Flo Clean Hygienic Flow Meters

The FloClean Sanitary turbine flow meter was designed for use in the food, beverage, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Models incorporate the most-up-to-date polishing technology and all materials comply with the FDA requirements.

To maintain the turbine’s hygiene standard, the Flo-Clean range contain removable thrust bearings for ease of cleaning and inspection. Models successfully meet the requirements of the 3-A Sanitary Standard number 28-04 for use in clean out of place (COP) meaning that the meters can be left in the line and flushed with a cleaning solution which thoroughly cleans the entire pipe system.

The QuikSert turbine flow meter range from Blancett are designed for accurate measurement of various liquids such as water, chemicals and light oils. This wafer style meter is quickly inserted between pipeline flanges and performs well in harsh environments due to it's rugged stainless steel construction and selection of safe and hazardous area displays. Incorporated inside the turbine meter is a helical rotor with long-life tungsten carbide shaft and bearings. 

This cost effective meter consists of a simple and easily serviceable design, providing an efficient long life time with low ownership costs. The range features optional LCD flow monitors such as the B2800 or B3000 with EEx ia or EEx D certification options.

The TFX Ultra is a compact ultrasonic flow meter that clamps onto the outside of pipes and does not contact the internal liquid. The technology has inherent advantages over alternate devices including: low-cost installation, no pressure head loss, no moving parts to maintain or replace, no fluid compatibility issue, and a large, bi-directional measuring range that ensures reliable readings even at very low and high flow rates. August 2016 ... Dynasonics - DXN Helps Keep Train Performance On Track

Bell Flow Systems were recently asked by a well regarded UK train operating company to supply non-invasive flow meter equipment that could easily be installed to carry out short term tests of oil flows on a number of trains in their fleet.

The client selected our DXN flow meter as it is easily clamped onto the outside of the pipe therefore avoiding the task of breaking the pipework to install a traditional in-line solution. DXN uses ultrasonic technology to gather accurate results 'non-intrusively', which does not require the trains systems to be turned off, which ensures rolling stock down-time is cut to a minimum. Measurement of flow is taken using a pair of clamp-on non-invasive ultrasonic sensors which take over 100 readings per second. The DXN meter benefits from a number of advanced features including a touchscreen interface, wizard-based start-up configuration, USB connectivity and Modbus TCP/IP connectivity.

 



The DXN portable ultrasonic flow meter from Dynasonics is capable of measuring a variety of liquid flows by employing multiple technologies, including both Doppler and transit time as well as having the capability to measure thermal heat energy using the Heat Meter accessory kit. The advantages of this hybrid technology are that it is able to instantaneously switch between Transit time and Doppler measurement depending on the current fluid properties.

July 2016 ... Badger Meter M5000 Given OIML and MID Approval

Badger Meter’s ModMag M5000 water meter has been given OIML and MID approval according to OIML R49-1 and MID M-001. OIML is the International Organisation of Legal Metrology established to promote global harmonisation of legal metrology procedure. The Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) is a European directive that matches the requirements of 10 different measuring instrument types, including gas and active electrical energy meters. The M5000 meter was found to meet the requirements required both within the OIML and MID test.

The M5000 features two internal battery packs with up to 20 years operation. Available from sizes DN15 to DN600, the M5000 is ideal for industrial and bidirectional flow applications. The meter benefits from having no moving parts and can be used to measure water containing particles.The high accuracy reading of +/-0.5% makes this innovative water meter indispensable for the water market.

April 2016 ... Badger Meter Launches New Cost Effective Turbine Meter

Badger Meter has recently released the B1500 series, a turbine flow meter suitable for dispensing various clean liquids such as water, light oils and chemicals.
 
The B1500 series are a cost-effective option for highly accurate and reliable flow measurement and are the ideal solution for clean, liquid flow applications in industrial processes, such as batching, blending, monitoring and general flow measurement. The new B1500 turbine series are best suited for automotive, chemical, aerospace and general industrial application’s, however these turbines are extremely rugged and also perform well in the harsh environments found in the oil and gas sector.
 
An optional B3000 flow monitor can easily be integrated onto the turbine to provide an economical, flow metering solution with multiple visual and system integration options. Presented on the powerful LCD display are flow rate and totals with various signal outputs and the option to transmit data to a user interface via Modbus RTU. A remote swivel mount can be specified which is capable of rotating 180 degrees for ease of viewing. Basic, advanced and solar-powered models provide users with the flexibility of options to meet the requirements of their unique applications.
This turbine range displays exceptional mechanical linearity, resulting in minimized temperature induced viscosity influence and increased useable flow range. Due to the precision helical rotor design, B1500 meters provide exceptional speed-of-response to step changes along with a significant reduction in press drop.
 
The rotor design utilizes ceramic ball bearings are lighter, more tolerant to extreme temperatures and produce less friction than stainless steel ball bearings which are commonly found in most turbine meters. The ceramic ball bearings are able to tolerate adhesive wear and they perform well in non-lubricating liquids that are usually found in cryogenic fluids and water.
 
The B1500 can be installed in any position without affecting the performance, turndown range or calibration.  For enhanced application specific performance, recalibration of the meter can be completed on-site using a calibrated vessel or weigh-scale or metering skid. For best performance and longevity, upstream filtration is advised to prevent bearing contamination and to avoid rotor blade damage. The B1500 series turbine flow meters come with a 10-point calibration, traceable to NIST standards.
 
Available in sizes from ¼ to 2 inches, the B1500 flow meter has a high measuring accuracy of 0.25%, when linearized with a B3000 flow monitor and an accuracy of 0.5% using a single-point averaged 
K-factor. Flow ranges are from 0.95 – 946 L/min (0.25 to 250 gpm) depending on the model chosen and the maximum operating temperature range is up to +300°C.
 
Models are constructed from 316 stainless steel and are available with either ANSI flange or national pipe thread (NPT) end fittings. Internal component materials include the rotors, which are made of 17-4 stainless steel, rotating on ceramic ball bearings. The supports, hangars and all other turbine assembly parts are made from 300 series stainless steel.

Badger Meters Vision series of turbine flow meters have been examined, tested and found to comply with the requirements of The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme which is also known as WRAS.
The low cost turbine meters from the Vision series are well known on the market. A new addition to the series is the Vision 3000. The Vision 3000 is a good choice for applications ranging from 2 to 60 l/min. It is great for the exact measurement of small quantities of liquid as well as measuring low flow rates.
The Vision 3000 turbine flow meter is entirely made out of Trogamid which is low-priced, transparent and ultra-light. The park features a disabled-accessible boat launch for canoes or kayaks as well as scenic views of native prairie grass, wetlands and oak savannas along the riverfront.

As the only park of its kind in the northern stretch of Milwaukee County, Badger Meter River Park will give residents public access to 270 feet of Milwaukee River shoreline.

Badger Meters Vision series of turbine flow meters have been examined, tested and found to comply with the requirements of The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS).

WRAS is a conformance mark that demonstrates that an item complies with high standards set out by water regulations in the United Kingdom. In order to receive WRAS approval the Vision turbines had to pass a series of tests to ensure that their design and manufacture prevents waste or contamination of drinking water supplies and are “of an appropriate quality and standard”.

Available in sizes ¼” and 3/8”, the Vision turbines have been designed for the exact measuring of small quantities of liquids and are ideal for coffee and beverage machines, dishwashers, washing machines, bakery machines, dental water jets and dosing systems.

The Vision Series consists of two turbine flow meter models: the V1000 for measuring liquid flow as low as 0.1 and up 2.5 l/min, and the V2000 for measuring liquid flow as low as 0.5 and up to 35 l/min. The flow meters provide accuracy of ±3% with resolution up to 18,500 pulses per litre, depending on the model. They have a temperature range of -20 to +100°C and withstand operating pressure up to 25 bar.

July 2015 ... Yo-Ho-Ho! Mag Meter Installed at New Pirate Themed Aquarium

Taking you on a journey underwater through a fantasy pirate world of lost treasure, sunken ships and fascinating marine life is the brand new Aquarium located on Skegness seafront.

The multi-million pound attraction, which opened on the 25th June, hosts a number of tanks housing an incredible variety of fish, from venomous predators to colourful shoals of tropical fish. The facility has a main large tank and several smaller innovative aquariums.



 
 
The main tank holds 40,000 litres of water and two storage tanks also hold 40,000 litres each, which are used to condition the water of the main tank, as well as sub-systems. With inherent advantages over more conventional water meters, the ModMag M2000, electromagnetic flow meter from Badger Meter was selected as an element of the water system by the construction company who undertook the project.
Construction site manager Peter Kent of K-Net Construction said: “Building an aquarium is an extremely delicate process and we need to make sure construction is perfect, as we are not dealing with just a building, but a whole life-support network.”

June 2015 ... Celebrating 110 Years of Innovation

Badger Meter recently celebrated their 110th Anniversary with a company executive party, held in a venue by the water of Lake Michigan.

The theme of the event — “110 Years of Making Water Visible” — recognises the company’s history of innovation and new products. In 1905 the first ‘frost proof’ water meter was invented by two Milwaukee entrepreneurs, little did they know that their invention would be the foundation for a company that has grown to be a worldwide leader in flow measurement technology.

June 2015 ... For Flow Measurement Virtually Anywhere

The ModMag M5000 is a battery-operated electromagnetic meter that provides the flexibility to install a reliable water flow meter virtually anywhere without sacrificing accuracy or performance. 

Designed, developed and manufactured under strict quality standards, ModMag M5000 features two internal battery packs with more than 20 years operation and a sophisticated processor based signal conversion with accuracies of ±0.5%. 

Electromagnetic flow meters have inherent advantages over other more conventional technologies, with no moving parts and a choice of liner and electrode materials, these meters can be used to measure conductive fluids, water and wastewater for instance including water containing particles such as sand or gravel. 

As standard the ModMag M5000 is equipped with a pulse output and an internal datalogger which can be read-out via Modbus RTU protocol. Data can also be retrieved via radio frequency or GSM/GPRS. Thus the data can be centrally collected and evaluated. 

Although the ModMag M5000 does not require mains power, it’s dual power option provides the choice to operate on both internal batteries and mains voltage, this provides a backup to ensure that data is not lost in case of power failure.

May 2015 ... Kuwait 'Clamp on' to Tackle Water Woes

Kuwait is one of the most water-scarce regions in the world but at the same time has one of the highest per capita water consumption rates at 500 litres per day. In order to monitor this consumption and develop water management strategies, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water have begun deploying innovative water meters.

Working together with an environmental measurement company Bell Flow Systems are undertaking a widespread project to supply and install non-invasive water meters on large domestic properties in Kuwait. With inherent advantages over in-line water meter technologies, the Dynasonics TFX Ultra™ ultrasonic clamp-on flow meters were chosen. 

 


The TFX Ultra™ simply clamps on to the outside of pipes and does not contact the internal liquid, this non-invasive technology means no remedial work needs to be carried out on pipework. Other advantages include zero pressure head loss, no moving parts to maintain and high accuracy. Equipped with Modbus or BACnet communication the meter can be linked to BMS systems or in this case to a bespoke logging & software analysis package, essential for providing a clear picture of the volumes and consumption patterns of water used in Kuwait homes.
 


The rugged, aluminum enclosure of the TFX Ultra™ ensures a long service life in harsh environments with varying temperatures such as those found in Kuwait. The chosen model featured remote transducers which were positioned on the main water pipe within or around the properties, often located on the roof, these were protected from the elements with a custom enclosure. The transducers were connected to the meter located within the property. The large and easy-to-read LCD display allowing users to view and monitor their water consumption data.

February 2015 ... Between Flanges- The Quick Insertion Turbine

Over the last 25 years Blancett have built up a reputation for producing rugged and accurate stainless steel turbines which remain popular within the oil and gas industry today. The QuikSert is one of Blancett’s innovative turbines which has been designed for quick installation.

The QuikSert is an in-line turbine flow meter that provides the same high accuracy and rigorous design of the standard Blancett turbine, but in a wafer-style mounting configuration. It’s unique between flanges design eliminates the need for mating flanges, requires less space in the flow line, lowers costs and provides easy, one-man installation.

Turbine flow meters operate by the fluid or gas passing through a turbine, causing the turbine to rotate at a speed proportional to velocity. As each turbine blade passes through the magnetic field generated by the meter's magnetic pick-up, an AC voltage pulse is generated. These pulses provide an output frequency that is proportional to volumetric flow.

The QuikSert in-line turbine flow meter was developed for liquid and gas applications where accuracy and dependability are of concern to the operator. For fluids the meter achieves an accuracy of ±1%, repeatability of ±0.1% and can handle temperatures up to +232°C with high temp pick up and for gas the meter achieves an accuracy of ±2%, repeatability of ±0.5% and can handle temperatures up to +330°C.

The meter features a 316 stainless steel housing and rotor support, CD4MCU stainless steel rotor, and abrasion-resistant tungsten carbide rotor shaft and bearings. For fluid models, precision upstream and downstream flow straighteners ensure a high degree of measurement accuracy. The QuikSert turbine is available in sizes 3/8” to 10” and with optional outputs for remote data logging.

This picture shows two large ModMAG M-Series® meters, 54 and 60 inches in diameter

which were designed for a project in which the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) would increase their water distribution capacity and reliability, allowing them to meet expanding fresh water demands in several southern California counties.

This picture was taken at a test facility where the meters met accuracy standards set by the California DWR at flow ranges ranging from 4500 to 80,000 gallons per minute.

Hydraulic Fluid Leak Detection Made Safer with Hedland Flow Meters  (First published on Badgermeter.com)

Hydraulic fluid power is often used to perform operational movement of heavy equipment. Small leaks in most hydraulic equipment are difficult to avoid, and in some cases small leaks are acceptable if they can be controlled. However, if left undetected, these smaller leaks can become larger, which can cause outright machinery failure. Failure of hydraulic machinery can cause costly downtime and put machine operators' safety at risk.

Because hydraulic fluid operates under high pressure, it is difficult to diagnose hydraulic circuit issues when the machinery is powered off. A common cause of operator injuries in hydraulic systems is operators physically investigating leaks while the system is operational because the fluid can be very hot and the lines are under pressure.

By installing Hedland flow meters to their equipment, operators get a clear, visible indication of hydraulic line health during operation, without the dangers of a person coming in close contact with operating machinery. A higher-than-usual flow reading may indicate a significant leak while a lower-than-usual flow reading may indicate a possible line blockage.

Where accurate flow measurements are required or even critical, it is imperative that the flow meter being used is producing correct and consistent results. Only by calibrating a flow meter can you provide assurance that it is performing accurately and within it’s stated specifications.

We recently commissioned an in-house flow meter calibration facility to offer low cost, flexible calibration services for flow meters of many measuring principles and sizes.

The facility sited in Buckinghamshire consists of three calibration rigs for water, oil and micro flow. The test rigs are UKAS traceable and are currently undergoing the development of quality, admin and technical operations to ISO 17025 with a vision to be certified early next year. 



 



Our calibration facility can test flow meters between ¼” and 4” in size and can handle flow rates from 0.001 litres up to 1000 litres per minute. The rigs incorporate highly accurate master meters as reference devices, the water calibration rig for example uses the latest electromagnetic flow meters from Badger Meter that perform to an accuracy of better than ±0.25%.

This new service allows us to offer re-calibrations of existing flow meters that are no longer performing correctly and also provide new flow meters pre-prepared for their application to reduce any inaccurate calibrations being made onsite by customers. The calibration facility will also be used for confirming the accuracy of flow meters, technology demonstrations and staff training.

In addition to the option of in-house calibration, a technician from Bell Flow Systems can also carry out an on-site calibration using proven re-calibration techniques if required. All calibrations are issued with a calibration certificate to ensure that all flow meters calibrated by us offer repeatable, accurate measurement, guaranteed.
